Support Services - Capt. Mitchell Johnson


Captain Mitch Johnson is a graduate of the 1983 senior class of Scotland High School. Captain Johnson began his service to our country and our citizens when he joined the United States Marine Corps. Johnson was distinguished as the Marine Corps Honor Man, an award given to the graduates that display leadership, teamwork and ”Esprit de Corps”. Johnson proceeded through the enlisted ranks where he was promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant.

In 1995 Captain Johnson began his service with the Scotland County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center. In 1996 Captain Johnson graduated Basic Law Enforcement Training at Robeson Community College and served as a transport officer in the detention center. Captain Johnson was transferred to the patrol division where he remained until 2003 when he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant. Captain Johnson worked as a Child Support enforcement officer until the year 2008. Captain Johnson was promoted to the position of Patrol Commander where he worked with administration and addressed the needs and assignments of the patrol division. This position coordinated special duty assignments while providing support for shift Lieutenant’s, provided vehicle management for repair and service of department vehicles. In 2010 Captain Johnson was promoted to the Chief Deputy position and was assigned the duties of purchase order procurement, providing resources for Investigation, Patrol, Civil and Detention. In 2014 under the leadership of Sheriff Ralph Kersey, Johnson was assigned captain of Support services and works closely with the Sheriff and Chief Deputy as the Training coordinator and Public information officer.

Captain Johnson has received his North Carolina Advance Law Enforcement Certificate. Additional certifications include General Instructor Certificate from the North Carolina Criminal Justice Commission Specialized Firearms Instructor, Subject Control and Arrest Instructor, Special Weapons and Tactics I and II, Taser electronic control device Instructor, OC Aerosol, Less than lethal Impact and Chemical munitions and Distraction Device Instructor.

Captain Johnson serves as the Sheriff’s Emergency Response Team Commander, and the Commander of the Sheriff’s Honor guard. He is responsible for the areas of Civil, Gun Permits and Sex Offenders.

Captain Johnson is a graduate of Southern Illinois University at Carbondale with a Bachelor of Science in Workforce Education and Development.
